Background of the Study
Land disputes in Akpabuyo have increasingly drawn attention due to their socio-economic and political ramifications. Archaeological research in this region offers a unique perspective on historical land use, territorial boundaries, and indigenous land tenure systems (Obi, 2023). Excavations and spatial analyses have uncovered evidence of ancient settlements and land demarcations that provide context for contemporary conflicts (Udo, 2024). By integrating archaeological findings with historical records and oral testimonies, researchers can reconstruct past land ownership patterns and dispute resolution mechanisms. Such reconstructions are vital for understanding the evolution of land tenure and for informing current legal and policy frameworks. The interdisciplinary approach, combining archaeology, history, and legal studies, has demonstrated that archaeological research can offer objective evidence to support fair dispute resolution and sustainable land management practices (Etim, 2025). This study critically examines how archaeological data can contribute to resolving modern land disputes in Akpabuyo, thereby offering a model for addressing similar conflicts in other regions.
Statement of the Problem
Land disputes in Akpabuyo are exacerbated by conflicting claims and historical ambiguities regarding land boundaries. The absence of reliable historical documentation often leads to protracted legal battles and social tensions. Although archaeological research has the potential to clarify historical land use patterns, its findings are rarely integrated into dispute resolution processes. This gap results in unresolved conflicts and undermines efforts toward equitable land management. This study seeks to address these issues by evaluating the role of archaeological evidence in informing contemporary land dispute resolutions (Okon, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess archaeological data relevant to historical land use.
To evaluate the integration of archaeological findings in legal frameworks.
To propose strategies for utilizing archaeological evidence in land dispute resolution.
Research Questions:
How can archaeological evidence clarify historical land boundaries?
What are the challenges of integrating such evidence into legal processes?
What strategies can enhance the role of archaeology in resolving land disputes?
Research Hypotheses:
Archaeological research can significantly clarify historical land tenure.
Integrating archaeological evidence improves the resolution of land disputes.
Collaborative frameworks between archaeologists and legal experts yield better outcomes.
Significance of the Study
This study highlights the potential of archaeological research to inform land dispute resolution, offering a multidisciplinary approach that bridges history and law. Its findings will benefit legal practitioners, policymakers, and communities by providing objective evidence that supports fair and sustainable land management practices (Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the application of archaeological research in resolving land disputes in Akpabuyo Local Government Area and does not cover broader legal reforms.
Definitions of Terms:
Land Disputes: Conflicts arising over property boundaries and ownership.
Land Tenure: The system of rights and arrangements regarding land use and ownership.
Archaeological Evidence: Material remains that inform historical land use patterns.
